We have teamed up with AromaPrime to review their range of smells that are used within many different rides & attractions at both Alton Towers Resort and Thorpe Park Resort to really immerse guests into the story that both parks are trying to tell. The smells used by both parks have the strength to put guests on edge and create tension or create a sense of pleasure.
We have been sent out a range of different scents, from: rides & attractions, Scarefest Mazes and Frights Nights Mazes. All of which will be described in full detail below.
Musty
From smelling this scent, a fusty smell comes straight to my mind. It creates a classic, old and abandoned atmosphere when smelling this, and especially within themed experiences. This smell is used at Alton Towers Resort within Hex: The Legend Of The Towers, as well as Duel: The Haunted House Strikes Back!
Vomit
This scent is a very strong and very accurate smell of sick/vomit, which was one of the worst smelling scents that we received! It is sure to put guests on edge upon smelling this scent within a themed experience/scare attraction. This smell was used at Alton Towers Resort within Darkest Depths, which was a Scare Maze that debuted at the resort in 2019.
Dungeon
From smelling this scent, a fusty and damp smell comes straight to my mind. It creates a classic, old and abandoned atmosphere when smelling this, and especially within themed experiences. This scent is similar to that of the Musty smell that is used within Duel: The Haunted House Strikes Back! and Hex: The Legend Of The Towers. This smell is used at the Dungeon Attractions around the world.
Woodsmoke
This smell is very strong and is an accurate scent to the smell of burning wood, smoke and a bonfire. This themed scent is used within Wicker Man at Alton Towers Resort and has become an iconic smell upon theme park enthusiasts and is highly recognisable.
Containment
This smell is used at Thorpe Park Resort within the Fright Nights attraction Containment, and has got a clinical smell, as well as a hint of a toilet smell to it. This smell aims to deliver a claustrophobic feel to guests upon smelling the scent within a confined space, as well as to create a sense of mystery and tension.
Platform 15
This smell is used at Thorpe Park Resort within the Fright Nights attraction Platform 15, and has got smoky smell, fitting in with the theme of the maze of an old abandoned railway. This scent also has a hint of an old smell, like an old building, which could be to take you back to the time of when the railway was operating.
Creek Freak Massacre
This smell is used at Thorpe Park Resort within the Fright Nights attraction Creek Freak Massacre, and has got a wood, rusty metal and rotting aroma to the scent. This smell aims to deliver a horrifying feeling to guests upon smelling the scent within the confined spaces and constant build up of tension throughout the attraction.
Fright Nights Cinema
This smell is used at Thorpe Park Resort within the Fright Nights attraction, Fright Nights Cinema, and has got a popcorn and fresh scent to it. This smell is a quite a sweet and pleasant scent, however aims to deliver a false sense of security to guests upon smelling the scent, creating a relaxed atomosphere before experiencing the fright of your life!
We would like to say a huge thank you to the team at AromaPrime for sending these themed scents out for us. It has been a great experience trying to recognise the different smells and guessing which attraction/scare maze they are from, before we had a look at the answers.
